How to get Barcelona to Montserrat: Train from Barcelona to Montserrat
To get to Montserrat, leave early in the morning, to get to Placa de Espana also known as Espana. Once you get to Place de Espana, find signs for Montserrat and buy tickets at the yellow machines for a combo ticket for the train and the cable car. Tickets are €20.50 per person round trip or €11.25 each way.
Take the R5 train to Montserrat and get off at the Aeri Montserrat exit to take the cable car. Once you exit the train, you will see the exit for the cable car and wait to take the cable car up to the mountains and Montserrat Monastery.

How long is the train from Barcelona to Montserrat?
They have a train that comes by every hour so be sure to show up on time or early, if you miss the train then you will have to wait an hour until the next one arrives. It takes about an hour and a half to get to Montserrat. It is good to pack a lunch or water beforehand, however, there is a little market you can buy food or water at or the cafeteria, so if you didn’t pack anything don’t worry there will be food, snacks, and drinks available.


What to see at Montserrat Barcelona
Ultimately, for the perfect view for your Montserrat Day Trip from Barcelona, you can take the short uphill walk/hike to Sant Miguel’s Cross. They will tell you it is about 40 minutes of a walk although we felt it may have been a little bit shorter. You will have the best view of the Monastery once you have reached this point.

Head back down the trail to the Monastery again. You will have access to the church and the courtyard for free which are stunning.

If you want to see more you can pay to access the museum. But by this point, we were tired since we decided to travel later in the day. The last train to leave depends on the day and availability. Usually, the train leaves around 6:15 pm or 18:15. You can see a more detailed train schedule on a brochure at the train station.

Why should you do a Montserrat Day Trip from Barcelona?
Well for us, we just wanted to get out of the city. We felt crowded and overwhelmed by all of the tourists and attractions in Barcelona, we wanted something more relaxing than the loud city noises. I think Montserrat is perfect for anyone especially if you want to experience more of the countryside and the beautiful nature. If you love to hike and experience the outdoors, then this is the perfect place for you to visit.
Is Montserrat monastery free?
Yes, the monastery is free, however, there are costs for the train, the cable car, food, drinks, and the museum.
Is there a dress code for Montserrat?
No, however, be smart with your choices. Obviously, don’t come without a shirt on or in a bathing suit.
What time does Montserrat open?
Every day from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

I’ve been to Barcelona 2x and still haven’t gotten to Montsurrat. We were planning to go last time, but missed the bus! UGH! I sure hope I get back there because it looks amazing.

Wow, I wish I had known about Montserrat when I was in Barcalona! Do you know if you can hike up instead of taking the cable car? Or is that the only way to the top?
I believe you can, but I’d suggest you start your day early. There is also a hiking trail once you get up the mountain past Sant Miguel’s Cross that you can continue to take.
It seems like now everybody is going to Montserrat! I love these mountains and how easy they are to reach from Barcelona. They are one of the nicest daytrips from the city and quite cheap! I am happy to see more and more posts about it!
