It’s considered to be a beautiful island that everyone would want to visit. I have actually traveled to this destination twice and absolutely love its relaxing vibes. Things to do in Camiguin | Where to go to in Camiguin

Camiguin is a popular tourist spot because they strive to be an eco-friendly place to visit. They try and preserve as much as they can of their tourist sites, natural habitats, and more. Additionally, you can visit some of the most beautiful beaches in the Philippines that are not as filled with tourists compared to other parts of the Philippines like Bohol, Cebu, and Palawan.

Where is the Island of Camiguin?

Camiguin is located in the southern province of the Philippines and in northern Mindanao.  It is located in the Bohol sea.

How to get to Camiguin Island

Cagayan de Oro is typically the only way to get to Camiguin island, most people will take a ferry boat from Cagayan de Oro to Camiguin.

White Island Camiguin

The White Island is a stunning sandbar located off the coast of Camiguin, a picturesque island province in the Philippines. Camiguin is known for its white sand beaches, natural beauty, volcanoes, hot springs, and lush landscapes. The white island in Camiguin is probably one of Camiguin’s most popular tourist attraction to visit. The island is made up of white sand, however, when looking at it, it looks as if it is made of white coral. It is not very soft to walk in, but the view is breathless and the water is clear and refreshing.  They even have people who sell food on the beach if you get hungry. Be sure to try some of the fresh sea urchins!

While on White Island, there are limited facilities, as it is a protected area. However, visitors can bring their own food, drinks, and snorkeling gear. Snorkeling is a popular activity, as the surrounding waters are teeming with marine life and vibrant coral reefs. Remember to bring sunscreen and proper protection from the sun, as there is no shade on the island.

The size of White Island can vary depending on the tides and weather conditions. During low tide, it measures around 2.4 hectares, but it may shrink to less than a hectare during high tide. Its shape also changes with the currents and season, making each visit a unique experience.

Hike Vulcan Volcano and see the stations of the cross 

This is an old volcano where you can easily get a great view of the entire island and the ocean as well. This is an uphill hike where you can climb up and stop at each of the stations of the cross. You will even find a small chapel at the top of the mountain with a large cross. The Philippines is a very religious country with Catholicism being the primary religion in the Philippines. Just don’t do what I did and hike this trail with flip-flops on, I regretted it and broke my sandals by the end of it.

Ardent Hibok Hibok Hot Spring

Ardent Hibok-Hibok or Mt Hibok-Hibok Hot Spring is located in Mambajao, the capital town of Camiguin. It is nestled at the base of Mount Hibok Hibok, an active stratovolcano and one of the main attractions on the island. The surroundings of Ardent Hibok-Hibok Hot Spring are lush and tropical, providing a serene atmosphere for visitors to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The steam rising from the pools adds to the tranquil ambiance. The mineral-rich waters of the hot spring are believed to have therapeutic benefits for various health conditions, including skin ailments and rheumatism. As with any natural hot spring, people often visit for relaxation and stress relief as well.

When you end your day on the white island, this is a great place to relax and let go of all your worries. There used to be a hot spring, however, because of the earthquake, there are only cold springs in this location. It is beautifully landscaped with manmade waterfalls and nets to prevent debris from above going into the clear drinkable water.  This is very cheap to get in, only costing about 30 pesos which is less than a US dollar. This was one of my favorite things to do in Camiguin.

Katibawasan Falls or Tuasan Falls

This waterfall is beautiful, however, there are so many waterfalls in the Philippines that are breathtaking.  If you have time, I would at least check out this waterfall. When I think of the Philippines, I think about all the beautiful waterfalls I will see across the country. There are so many natural waterfalls, oceans, and landscapes to experience in the Philippines. If you come here, you should at least visit one of these gorgeous waterfalls. 

Sto Niño Cold Spring

Sto. Niño Cold Spring is situated in the municipality of Catarman, on the northern coast of Camiguin Island. It is approximately 23 kilometers away from the capital town of Mambajao. As the name suggests, Sto. Niño Cold Spring is a natural cold spring, which means the water remains cool even during hot weather. The spring’s water comes from the surrounding rainforest, making it crystal clear and refreshing to swim in.

Like many other places in the Philippines, Sto. Niño Cold Spring has a local legend associated with it. According to the tale, during the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vulcan Daan in the 1870s, a local priest prayed for divine intervention, and the spring miraculously emerged, sparing the village from the lava’s destruction. The cold spring is now considered a symbol of protection and a testament to the locals’ faith.

One of the best places to cool down in the Philippines is the many cold springs and crystal-clear waters. If you are anything like me, you sometimes want to take a break from the salty seawater and just enjoy lounging around in freshwater. The cold water helps me relax and not have to worry about my eyes burning. The good thing about many of these cold springs are they are usually covered and help prevent you from direct sunlight. 

Giant Clam Sanctuary

The Giant Clam Sanctuary is a conservation site located in the municipality of Catarman, Camiguin, in the Philippines. This sanctuary is dedicated to the protection and preservation of endangered species of giant clams, which play a vital role in maintaining the health of coral reef ecosystems.

Situated in Barangay Bonbon on the northern coast of Camiguin Island, the Giant Clam Sanctuary is easily accessible and welcomes visitors interested in learning about these magnificent creatures and the importance of marine conservation. The sanctuary is home to several species of giant clams, including the colorful Tridacna gigas, Tridacna squamosa, Tridacna derasa, and Tridacna maxima. This sanctuary has a collection of over 2,500 which are located right in the ocean. If you decide to visit this area, please avoid wearing sunblock as it could damage these beautiful clams. This is a must when it comes to things to do in Camiguin.

Lounge and Swim at Paras Beach Resort

One of Camiguin’s most popular resorts on the Island is the Paras Beach resort. This resort is the most popular when it comes to things to do in Camiguin. There are many reasons for this from the great accommodation, beautifully designed pools areas, and more. It’s very kid-friendly and close to a lot of popular things within the Camiguin area. If you don’t go to Paras Beach resort you should at least relax at one of the many beach resorts or houses on the island. 

Mantigue Island Nature Park

Another island to hop from Camiguin is the popular Mantigue Island. This small island is located about 3.5 kilometers from the main island. It’s a great place to relax, go snorkeling, and see some crystal clear blue and green waters. You can easily take a boat there in about 20 minutes’ time. When traveling in the Philippines, we have a tendency to pack a picnic, so be sure to pack your own meals and of course bring your trash with you to preserve these beautiful beaches. 

Burias Shoals

If you enjoy diving, this is the perfect place to visit. This is a protected marine sanctuary that has some stunning coral, tropical fish, and so much more in this area that can be discovered under the sea. Frogfish, blue-spotted stingray, turtles, and big pufferfish are some of the local fish you can find in this area. This is also a great snorkeling site as well if you are uncomfortable with diving. You will also find Colorful coral reefs in the shallow waters. It’s a great place to get some beautiful nature underwater photos.

Freediving

This is why most people travel to the Philippines is to be able to free dive. This is one of the most popular things to do in Camiguin for tourists. A lot of the waters here in the Philippines are crystal clear and beautiful to look at. You can easily get some free diving hours here as well. What I love about freediving in the Philippines is that the water is warm and you don’t have to worry about it being too cold and needing a wetsuit. The water temperatures are absolutely perfect which makes it a great location to get your feet wet.

Bura Soda Water Park

This is the perfect location for kids. Water parks in the Philippines are fun and relaxing and the waters are cool and a bright blue. The water is good to swim in and supposedly tastes like a side which is where it gets its name. What is great about this place is that you don’t have to worry about the toxic chemicals of chlorine and enjoy natural spring water swimming pool to swim in.

Sunken Cemetery

The former capital of Camiguin, along with its cemetery, now lies submerged under the sea. During low tide, the sunken land and gravestones are still visible. However, from 1948 to 1953, the area experienced further sinking as Mount Vulcan erupted again, causing the sunken land to plunge even deeper, reaching depths of around twenty feet. In 1982, a significant large cross was erected on the solidified lava, serving as a poignant marker for the resting place of the Camiguin people’s ancestors. This location has since been referred to as the “Sunken Cemetery.” The site holds historical significance, reminding visitors of the area’s past and the importance of preserving its cultural heritage.

Buy and eat some Pastel de Camiguin and Lanzones

Pastel de Camiguin is a famous local delicacy and a must-try when on the island. It is a sweet, soft bun filled with a rich and creamy yema (custard) filling. These buns are often sold individually or in boxes, making them a perfect snack or souvenir to take home.

Lanzones is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia, and Camiguin is famous for producing some of the sweetest and juiciest lanzones in the Philippines. The fruit is small and oval-shaped, with a thin, yellowish to light brown skin. The translucent, juicy flesh inside is what makes it so delicious.

Explore Eco adventure at Mount Mambajao

An eco-adventure at Mount Mambajao, also known as Mount Hibok-Hibok, offers an exciting and immersive experience in the lush natural landscapes of Camiguin Island. Mount Hibok-Hibok is an active stratovolcano and is the highest peak on the island, making it a popular destination for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts.

Enjoy the View at Tungatok Viewdeck

Tungatok Viewdeck is a popular tourist attraction located in the province of Kalinga, in the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines. The viewdeck offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and landscapes, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience the beauty of the region’s natural scenery.

The name “Tungatok” is derived from the local Kalinga language, and the viewdeck is usually accessible by a short trek or hike, depending on the specific location. One of the most popular things to do in Camiguin is to visit the waterfalls. Camiguin waterfalls is an excellent way to experience the island’s natural beauty and enjoy its lush landscapes. Camiguin is home to several stunning waterfalls that are worth exploring. Here are some of the must-visit waterfalls on the island:

• Katibawasan Falls – Katibawasan Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls on Camiguin. It is located in the town of Mambajao and is easily accessible by road. The falls cascade from a height of around 250 feet into a large pool, making it a refreshing spot for swimming and relaxation. The surrounding lush vegetation adds to its picturesque setting.
• Tuasan Falls – Tuasan Falls is another beautiful waterfall situated in the municipality of Catarman. It requires a short trek through the rainforest to reach the falls, but the journey is well worth it. The falls feature a multi-tiered cascade, creating a series of small pools perfect for swimming and cooling off.
• Katunggan Park and Falls – Located in the town of Guinsiliban, Katunggan Park and Falls is a serene and less crowded waterfall. It offers a peaceful ambiance surrounded by trees, making it an ideal spot for a tranquil escape and a dip in its inviting waters.
• Binangawan Falls – Binangawan Falls is a hidden gem in Camiguin, located in the municipality of Sagay. The falls can be reached by trekking through the forest and crossing rivers, adding a sense of adventure to the visit. The journey is rewarded with a breathtaking view of the falls, cascading into a natural pool.
• Tangub Hot Spring and Waterfall – Tangub Hot Spring and Waterfall is a unique combination of a hot spring and a cool waterfall. It’s located in the town of Catarman and is a great spot to experience both the soothing hot waters and the refreshing waterfall, providing a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

To visit these waterfalls, you can rent a tricycle or a motorbike to take you to the trailheads, and some may require a short hike to reach. It’s essential to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water, especially if you plan to hike to some of the more remote falls. Additionally, it’s a good idea to check the weather conditions and inquire about the accessibility of the waterfalls, as heavy rains can affect the trails and swimming conditions. Remember to respect the environment and follow any guidelines set by the local authorities to preserve the natural beauty of these magnificent waterfalls for future generations to enjoy.

There aren’t many beaches but there are a lot of beach resorts where you can enjoy the beaches from. These are a few beaches you can go and check out, but you can also pay to stay at a beach resort for the day if you wanted to.

• Golden Sunset Beach

Things to eat in Camiguin Philippines

There are some things that are just unique to this beautiful island. There are a lot of foods that are only local or native to certain areas and the way they make them. For example, the southern Philippines is known for kinilaw which is not found everywhere. It’s mostly a Visayan dish prominent in many parts of the southern part of the Philippines like Cebu City, Mindanao, and other areas that speak Bisayan, Cebuano, and Visayan.

• Sea Urchin – I actually got to try this at the beach life and fresh. It’s absolutely delicious and usually served raw with vinegar. Although, I would suggest you be careful with this since unfortunately, some people can and do get sick off of this.
• Pastel – This is a soft bun or bread that is filled with a sweet filling. There are some that have different types of fillings like ube.
• Lanzones including Lanzones Ice Cream and Lanzones Wine
• Chicharon Pusit – Like a pork chicharon but instead made with squid. This fried dish is great to snack on in the car or at the beach.

Popular Camiguin Resorts | Where to stay in Camiguin Island 

• Paras Beach Resort – This is probably one of the most popular resorts on the island. It’s popular mostly among locals because of its affordability, great location, and fun resort commodities like the pool. I enjoyed staying here on my first visit to Camiguin Island. Book your stay here.
• Camiguin Highland Resort – Another resort that is popular is the Camiguin Highland Resort. It’s convenient, however, not my favorite or most memorable place to stay in Camiguin. The rooms are spacious and great for large groups of people. Book your stay here.
• Camiguin Volcan Beach Eco Retreat & Dive Resort – If you want something more eco-friendly and with tours that provide eco-friendly accommodations, you can easily stay here. You can get a cottage or enjoy a room along the beach. Book your stay here.
• Balai sa Baibai Resort – If you want a honeymoon or just a gorgeous place to stay in Camiguin, I highly suggest you stay here. The facilities are absolutely gorgeous with a beautiful pool and a private beach. Book your stay here. 

Best time to visit Camiguin Island

Weather in Camiguin Island

To ensure the best Philippines Itinerary, be sure to travel during the best weather months. The best time to visit is between November and April during the dry season. During the summer months, you will have frequent monsoon rains which can be difficult to navigate and cancel a lot of ferries. However, that still doesn’t mean that you won’t have rain or issues with the weather during these months. From November through April, the weather is typically cooler as well, well cooler to Filipinos, but still generally warm where you are able to swim. The weather in the Philippines does not get cold unless you go high up into the mountains. It’s humid and hot typically all year long.

The Philippines is often crowded or busy during the Christmas season due to family flying back to the Philippines so tickets can often be more expensive during those months. The Philippines is a very Catholic country so a lot of families will go back to their hometowns and buses, ferries, etc, will be packed and oftentimes sold out. You will also experience a lot more traffic especially before, during, and after Christmas.

How to get around Camiguin Island

Trike or Tricycles

Trikes are a common form of transportation in the Philippines.  They are motorcycle-powered sidecars that can accommodate up to three passengers. Tricycles can take you to most tourist destinations and are readily available in the main towns and near popular attractions. Each area has slightly different. If you go to an area that has more hills, the trikes are more angled like a wheelie.  Some are larger like this one and others just hold about two people inside (which they often squeeze in more people to make costs cheaper).  If you want to travel like a local, be sure to take a Trike like this one or a Jeepney.  

Philippine Banka

In order to get to the white island, you must take a ride in a Banka. There is no other way to get to this wonderful island. Banka rides are fun and enjoyable. There are people on the beach there who sell you the lifejackets, however, Bankas is considered one of the safest boats to travel in. To visit the nearby islands and enjoy activities such as snorkeling, you can join boat tours organized by local operators. These tours are a great way to explore the marine wonders around Camiguin.

Hire a driver or rent a motorbike

You can easily hire a driver within the Philippines so if you are driving here from Cagayan de Oro or somewhere else, it will be best to hire a driver in one fo the bigger islands. You may need to pay for their accommodations as well. 

If that isn’t something you are interested in doing, you can also hire a trike driver for the day as well or if you feel comfortable, you can rent your own motorbike to tour the island. Renting a motorbike or scooter is a popular option for travelers who prefer more flexibility in their transportation. Several rental shops on the island offer motorbikes and scooters for daily or hourly rates.

Van Rental

For larger groups or those who prefer more comfort and convenience, van rentals with drivers can be arranged through local tour operators or rental companies. This option allows you to have a private tour tailored to your interests.

Keep in mind that while transportation options are available, the frequency of public transport might vary depending on the location and time of day. If you have specific places you want to visit or if you’re on a tight schedule, it’s a good idea to plan your transportation in advance or ask for recommendations from your accommodation provider. Also, always negotiate fares or rates before starting a trip and be prepared to pay in cash, as credit cards may not be widely accepted in smaller establishments.
