Cao Lau – Must eat the popular Morning Glory Hoi An Restaurants
This dish is a very delicious noodle dish that has minimal broth at the bottom. It has a crispy fried piece that your break up and put the broken pieces into the dish. You then mix the vegetables, noodles, crisps, meat together into the broth at the bottom until it is covered in this sweet-savory sauce.
Why should you try Cao Lau? – This popular dish is famous in old town Hoi An. When I went to Saigon most of the locals didn’t even know of this dish. To be considered authentic Cao Lau, you can only enjoy this dish in Hoi An.

Vietnamese Coffee
One of the most popular things to drink in Vietnam is Vietnamese coffee. There are several types of coffee you can get in Hoi An and I suggest you try as many cafes as possible. Also, if you have a chance try and find a place that serves peach tea. Oh man, I wish I knew about this drink beforehand, I would have drunk it every day of my life there.
Why should you have Vietnamese Coffee? – Vietnamese coffee is quite different in Vietnam compared to the rest of the world. They usually sweeten it with condensed milk and one of the popular coffees in Vietnam is the egg coffee which has egg and condensed milk to make a foamy or frothy topping for a bitter espresso underneath.
The second coffee that is very popular is coconut coffee. I found the coconut coffee to be best at Cong Caphe since that is their signature, however, you can get them at pretty much any Vietnamese coffee shop in Hoi An.

Hoanh Thanh Chien known as Wontons
Wonton is a popular dish in Hoi An. Although I wasn’t a huge fan of it, they were still quite good. I have more of a savory palate except when it comes to dessert. So the pineapple and sweet fruit mixed in this dish were quite sweet to me. There were a few vegetables and fruits with meat mixed together in a sauce and topped on a crispy wonton.

Banh Bao known as White Rose Dumplings – One of the best food in Hoi An
Now, one of my favorite dishes in Banh Cuon consists of rice noodles. This dish reminds me of that with flavors except they are stuffed with meat. They use a type of rice noodle and stuff them with meat and you dip them or cover them with this sweet-sour like fish sauce.
Why should you try White Rose Dumplings? – This dish is only accessible in Hoi An. You won’t be able to find it anywhere else in Vietnam. They say if you haven’t had the dumplings in Hoi An, then they aren’t considered white rose dumplings. Be sure not to miss out on these delicate and beautiful dumplings. These dumplings are made fresh daily for you to enjoy.

Banh Xeo – This is must-have street food in Hoi An
This Vietnamese dish is very popular and famous in Hoi An ancient town. There are other places you can get this outside of Hoi An, however, theirs is quite different in comparison. These are some of the best dishes you need to eat and are a great way to enjoy fresh vegetables.
Bahn Xeo is called a sizzling pancake that is savory. The pancakes are filled with shrimp and bean sprouts. You take some rice paper and place the pancake inside and open them up to place in your favorite vegetables and meat. They provide you with vegetables like lettuce and cucumber to stuff inside of them and you dip these in a peanut-type sauce.
Why should you try Banh Xeo? – Banh Xeo is well known for Hoi An. There is quite a difference between Banh Xeo in Hoi An versus in Saigon, so if you plan to travel to both, you need to experience both. The Banh Xeo in Saigon is very large and fills a huge plate. You need to cut them into smaller pieces in order to enjoy and sometimes not served with rice paper like in Hoi An. I suggest you try it at Bale Well but also at the Central Food Market as well to get a comparison. It’s a popular dish for a reason.
If you can only visit one of the many Hoi An restaurants, I highly suggest you make the trip to Bale Well out of all of them. It’s one I continue to think about.

Banh Mi – My Favorite Hoi An Street Food (I ate it 3 times!)
This is a famous Vietnamese sandwich that is popular all over Vietnam. I used to eat these a lot in my neighborhood since I lived in a big Vietnamese community. These sandwiches are on a small french baguette and stuffed with pate, sliced meats or sausages, and fresh vegetables. Sometimes the sandwiches are also covered in a sweet and spicy sauce or you may add it yourself later on.
Why should try Banh Mi at Banh Mi Phuong? – There is usually a long line that comes from around the corner, but don’t worry this restaurant will get you in and out quite quickly. This restaurant was famous because of the late Anthony Bourdain. This is one of his favorite restaurants in Hoi An. The best thing is, if you want to enjoy your time at the beach, you can easily grab one of these sandwiches to go and take it there with you.
Note: If you don’t have time to try this place out, I suggest you go down the street to the Banh Mi Queen.

Fresh Spring Rolls
Fresh spring rolls are quite popular in Vietnamese cuisine. Maybe people love the freshness of these rice paper filled rolls. They are often filled with noodles, meat or shrimp, coriander/oregano, and sometimes other vegetables. Usually, they are served with a peanut sauce or a sweet chili sauce.

Bun Thit Nuong
During my food tour in Saigon, I was able to experience this delicious dish. They have it on the menus in Hoi An as well at many of the street food stalls, but I did not have a chance to try it there. This is a rice noodle-based dish topped with meat, fried spring rolls, and a fish sauce. You can add chili peppers if you want to make it a little spicier if you wish.

Mi Quang
Mi Quang is similar to Cao Lau but still quite different. This is a popular street food dish that is rice noodle based. The dish is quite popular in Central Vietnam. There are a variety of spices used in this dish like turmeric, peanuts, toasted sesame rice crackers, chili peppers, and lime. Like Cao Lau this dish is only served with a small amount of broth and comes with a crispy cracker you must break up into smaller pieces in order to consume. You will then mix the dish thoroughly to enjoy.

Bánh Tráng Nướng known as Vietnamese Pizza
Now I have to admit, I missed out on this dish. I had so many delicious food options it was just so hard for me to not try everything. This was the worst part about my solo travels is not being able to eat everything and share it with everyone. This dish uses rice paper as the “crust” or “dough” of the pizza. It is topped with meat, vegetables, and sauces. Each place makes these differently, but I don’t think this was one I missed out on or feel is notoriously known for in Hoi An.

Pho Bo
Now you can’t come to Vietnam without eating Pho, I mean that is a given and the broth here is just so amazing. I literally couldn’t get enough Pho during my travels, to this day I still want more and I just got back less than a week ago from my travels. It’s probably one of my favorite dishes to eat.

Bun Bo
Although this dish actually originates or is very popular in Hue which is a day trip from Hoi An, I still suggest you take the time to try it here. This soup is a dish that is typically spicy and a little salty. There are different types of beef and the broth is beef-based. The dish consists of rice noodles and served with lime, cilantro sprigs, diced green onions, raw sliced onions, bean sprouts, and chili sauce.

Banh Cuon
This seriously is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. I absolutely love this dish because it reminds me of home-cooked meals at my friend’s house. She and her family would make this dish for us often because we could easily get the freshly made rice noodles at the local farmer’s market. This dish consists of rice noodles, topped with fried onions and covered in a sweet and salty fish sauce.

Banana Crepe – Best Food in Hoi An for desserts
I have a pretty bad sweet tooth, so it’s important for me to find some delicious street food desserts. One of my favorite street food desserts was a banana crepe. Most of these vendors you can find outside at night trying to sell their favorite desserts. This was one of my favorites only because you can never go wrong with this classic. Bananas and Nutella always pair well together.

Mango Smoothie or any fruit flavor smoothie you want
To stay cool during the hot tropical weather of Vietnam, I highly suggest you grab a fruit smoothie from one of the vendors at the central market. When you sit down to eat, many of the vendors partner with others that create delicious smoothies. I chose to get the mango smoothie and boy did it not disappoint. It was smooth, no fruit stuck at the bottom or in the straw and was not too sweet. It was a perfect consistency.

How much does it cost to eat in Hoi An Restaurants versus Hoi An Street Food
The costs for eating in Hoi An vary depending on when you are traveling to Hoi An, what types of dishes you are getting, and more.
I have found most of the dishes range from 20,000 – 30,000 VND for Hoi An Street Food. If you go to the bigger and more famous restaurants, the prices can be a little more expensive at around 40,000 – 50,000 VND. For coffee and fancy drinks at cafes, they usually ranged around 55,000 VND.
For Banh Mi, however, is the cheapest to get at around 15,000 VND, although Mi Phuong was a little more expensive. If you want to eat seafood, it’s going to be even more expensive obviously. Bale Well was one of the most expensive restaurants, however, it comes as a set with a drink, food, and dessert. it is well worth it and the price was around 130,000 VND which is approximate.
Is it safe to eat Hoi An Street Food?
Of course! Honestly, I was quite worried. As someone who frequents trips to the Philippines, I almost always get sick there. I can’t have ice, I can’t drink the local water, I can’t eat the eggs, and so much more in the Philippines.
However, while eating in Vietnam, I literally ate everywhere and was prepared with my Imodium in case I had a bad case of you know what. I did not have a single issue with my stomach and I had plenty of desserts with ice, milk, and my fair share of street food.
Obviously, I suggest you still come prepared to expect the worst. Everyone is different, but I wouldn’t hesitate to try the dishes.

- Cau Lau Noodles
- Wontons
- Com ga – Chicken Rice
- Vietnamese Pizza
- Bahn Bot Loc
