It’s that time for Adventures with NieNie’s Featured Blogger of the month program again. Each month I am sharing a new featured blogger. This program is to work with other travel bloggers and introduce them to my readers, that means YOU! This is a collaborative and supportive aspect to Adventures with NieNie.
Meet Jennifer from The Rainbow Route!
- What inspired you to become a travel blogger?
I woke up one day and realised I could combine my love of travel with my love of writing. I always use travel blogs when I’m planning trips and I thought this would be a great way for me to pass on tips of my own.
- What makes you unique compared to other bloggers?
As a lesbian and gluten-free traveller, I experience the world differently than most others. There are daily difficulties that both my wife, who is also celiac, and I face when we are in new places. The Rainbow Route offers readers advice based on first-hand experiences in travelling as a queer couple and how to manage food allergies while abroad.
- What got you into traveling?
It was a spontaneous decision to go to Central America inspired by a travel guide I picked up somewhat at random. I had always been interested in Mayan history, so I planned an itinerary visiting as many of the famous Mayan ruins as I could in a month. After that, I was hooked on travelling. Being somewhere different and constantly having new experiences is what gets me up in the morning.
- What country is next on your bucket list?
I have a few trips to Cuba and Hawaii already booked. However, Iceland is high on my list of places to visit soon. I imagine it like Canada on steroids. My wife Laura wants to come on this trip too, so we are thinking of getting there in summer 2018.
- Where do you currently live?
I live in the beautiful, but expensive, city of Vancouver, British Columbia. We are truly lucky here to be surrounded by so much nature. I don’t know if I could live anywhere else.
- What is your most memorable travel experience so far and why?
It’s so hard to pick just one! I have had a fascination with penguins for many years now, so being able to see these birds close up in New Zealand is definitely on the list of most memorable experiences. But sometimes it’s the little things, like having a Blue Morpho butterfly land on your face while you read in a hammock, that really stick with you.
- What is your favorite city and country and why?
I am not usually a fan of big cities, but I absolutely loved Paris. The fact that they have gluten-free eclairs didn’t hurt, but there is a confident energy to the people who live there that I thrived on.
- What is one destination that didn’t meet your expectations and why?
Japan wasn’t quite everything I thought it would be. Unfortunately, we travelled at a time when some of the best hikes were still closed due to snow, so I think a summer visit would really change my perception on the scenery. Tokyo was much more of a normal city than I was led to believe. I had thought there would be robots and weird vending machines everywhere, but the off-beat stuff was fairly subtle.
- What is your greatest personal accomplishment?
Getting married to my beautiful wife! We are celebrating our first anniversary in July and we can’t wait to explore more of the world together!
