It’s that time for Adventures with NieNie’s Featured Blogger of the month program again. Each month I am sharing a new featured blogger. This program is to work with other travel bloggers and introduce them to my readers, that means YOU! This is a collaborative and supportive aspect to Adventures with NieNie.
Meet Tasha Amy from Backpackers Wanderlust!
- What inspired you to become a travel blogger?
I love exploring and experiencing new things around the world, whether that’s sights, attractions or cultures. While on my first major trip abroad to Costa Rica I set up a little basic WordPress blog to keep friends and family updated. Then from there I just couldn’t help writing, photographing and sharing my adventures online in hopes to inspire others to travel and my blog grew.
- What makes you unique compared to other bloggers?
What makes me unique is I try to keep my blog as real as possible while also containing necessary information for my readers and awesome photos.
The backpacking lifestyle a lot of the time is not what Instagram photos make it out to be and people need to know that. I have had many cockroaches lurking in my budget hotel bathroom, been squished on a bus between a chicken and a Nepali lady for 8 hours and have failed at using a squatter toilet more times than I can count.
On the other side, I keep track of all my expenses, what I do and how to get places, all so I can share them with my reader. Being an accounting student before the travel bug hit me I can be quite frugal with my money, knowing the cheapest places to eat and stay, though not comprising on quality. I also have a diploma in photography and I love to share the images I take, in hope to inspire others. By the way I am extremely lucky an airline is yet to weigh my carry on as my camera gear puts me well over the limit!
- What got you into traveling?
I was not raised in a family where we travel. My parents are homebodies and have the ideology that I should work hard, save for a house and buy material items, rather than plane tickets to unforgettable memories. Back when I was in University I decided to travel to Costa Rica to do some volunteer work and that’s when I was bitten by the travel bug and I have been planning new adventures and traveling ever since.
- What country is next on your bucket list?
I am yet to travel to Europe so I would love to explore of there one day, especially having the chance to see Croatia and Italy. I already have my dream Europe backpacking route planned, all that’s left is to save up and buy the tickets!
Though, the next country I will be visiting is Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. This is mainly thought of as a honeymoon paradise place, though I am going to show how it can be done on a budget.
- Where do you currently live?
I am currently living in Middle Earth, otherwise known as New Zealand. My home right now is a town in the North Island called Taupo, where I work a 9-5 job to fund my travels and any extra time is spent growing my blog.
- What is your most memorable travel experience so far and why?
My most memorable travel experience so far would be hiking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. Being in the Himalayas, seeing beautiful snow capped mountains, fluffy yaks and the natural beauty of our planet is just amazing. The I got tears of happiness crossing over the Throng La Pass at 5416m was crazy, it’s the highest trekking pass in the world!
- What is your favourite city and country and why?
It’s not so much of a city, but I fell in love with the Island of Koh Phagan, Thailand. Visiting outside of the full moon dates the place had a really relaxed vibe. It was everything I imagined Thailand to be, amazing beaches, blue water, delicious cheap food and budget hostels. I hope one day to move to Koh Phagan, it would be my dream location.
- What is one destination that didn’t meet your expectations and why?
I had heard that Phi Phi Island in Thailand was meant to be amazing, with awesome nightlife, beautiful beaches and beautiful sights. Though, I don’t reckon it had much of any of this. In my opinion, it was all just overrun with tourists squished in the narrow island streets. On the beach, the tide would go out so far leaving a muddy mess on one side, whereas on the other side is where the ferries dock all day, so the water isn’t the cleanest. The night life was sure existent, though it was all a little too much, with drunk teenagers swinging around buckets of alcohol, screaming, laughing and doing the unthinkable all over the streets. In all honesty, it just wasn’t the slice of paradise I had imagined.
- What is your greatest personal accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment would definitely be traveling solo in Myanmar, a country where tourism is a new concept and there is very little infrastructure for these tourists. I am the type of person who feels more comfortable being with someone else; whether that’s a partner or a friend. So, jumping on a plane and flying there was certainly out of my comfort zone and I loved every moment of it.
